Toxic Mold and Your Home
54Normal problems in the home may create the right conditions for mold growth. Structural damage, flooding, water leaks, a lack of ventilation, and improperly installed insulation all create conditions that can foster mold growth. Basements and attics are the most common areas with this problem.
In sufficient quantities, the presence of mold spores create health hazards. Issues related to the so-called “black mold” refer to the type of molds that produce mycotoxins. Not all mold that is colored black is actually true Stachybotrys mold.
Those with asthma or allergies, such as young children and infants, the elderly, and people already suffering with health problems are more susceptable to health problems related to mold infestation.
Common symptoms from mold exposure include:
- Headaches and Sinus Congestion
- Immune system disorders
- Allergic reactions and Allergies
- Asthma Flare-ups
- Bronchitis
Toxic mold syndrome, sometimes called 'sick building syndrome', is another serious health hazard. Although no mold can be seen or smelled, the entire building interior is contaminated and produces mold exposure symptoms.
If you can see mold in your home, you can be sure that more of it exists elsewhere, usually in places you can't see. The spores themselves might be dormant, but it’s important to get rid of them so they don't create problems later. If you suspect that your home has a mold problem, you should have an inspection performed by a trained and certified mold inspector.
